How to solve Data and AI problems with a Data Design Sprint

By Kelsey Yorke

Lost in data chaos? You’re not alone.

One of our Customers faced a challenge that might sound familiar to you. They needed a dashboard to tell their story – but had no idea where to start. What data should they use? How should it be structured? And how could they ensure the insights were not just numbers on a screen but truly actionable?

Then came the challenge of implementing a data platform or AI model. With competing priorities and technical complexities piling up, the project stalled. They tried different approaches – some too slow, some too rigid – but none delivered the clarity they needed.

That’s when they turned to us. Through our Mojo Design Sprint, we worked side by side with their team, guiding them through a structured, facilitated approach to cut through complexity, align stakeholders, and turn ideas into action. With our expertise, they were able to move forward with a solution that delivered real, measurable results.

Now, instead of feeling stuck, they have a proven framework to confidently harness their data, drive smarter decisions, and create lasting impact – and we can help you do the same. Whether you’re designing a data platform, reporting system, analytics framework, or AI-powered solution, our sprint model helps teams achieve clarity, build momentum, and design solutions that deliver meaningful results.

What is a Mojo Design Sprint?

A Mojo Design Sprint is our streamlined approach to solving complex data and AI challenges through collaborative, structured problem-solving sessions. Inspired by Google Design Sprints, we’ve refined the process to be more agile and focused, achieving the same outcomes in approximately as little as three half-day sessions rather than an intensive five-day workshop.

Leveraging principles from Design Thinking, we guide teams through a structured approach that:

  • Engages stakeholders in a co-design process.
  • Extracts and synthesises the best requirements from all participants.
  • Provides a clear problem definition, future state vision, and delivery plan.
  • Fosters collaboration and ensures all voices are heard in the decision-making process.

Why use a Mojo Design Sprint?

A Mojo Design Sprint can help organisations:

  • Quickly understand the problem and user needs – We facilitate interactive workshops to uncover pain points, opportunities, and system inefficiencies.
  • Explore the possibilities of data and AI – Using empathy mapping, journey mapping, and structured ideation techniques, we define ideal outcomes and technological opportunities.
  • Co-create and validate solutions – Stakeholders actively shape the solution through iterative feedback loops, ensuring better adoption.
  • Develop an actionable delivery plan – We help teams align on a clear direction and define actionable next steps, providing a structured path from concept to implementation.

Our five-week Sprint process

Our Mojo Design Sprint is a structured approach that helps organisations transition from problem identification to solution design. Depending on the needs of the project, our sprints can take different forms. Some focus purely on design – running over a couple of weeks to define requirements and create a clear roadmap for implementation. Others follow a Design+Build approach, incorporating the development of an agreed Minimum Viable Product (MVP) as part of the sprint.

Below is an example of a dashboard design sprint we recently conducted, demonstrating how this process can drive impactful results.

Real-world impact: Case Studies

Our Mojo Design Sprint methodology has been successfully applied across multiple industries and problem statements. Here are three examples of its impact:

1. Centralised reporting & contract management for an environmental organisation

  • Challenge: A team needed a better way to track and retrieve project data for financial forecasting and compliance.
  • Approach: Conducted a Mojo Design Sprint to co-design a SharePoint and Power BI reporting solution.
  • Outcome: The SharePoint solution offered a centralised location for project and financial information, while the Power BI reporting tool provided an interface for quick insights on project status, location details, financial overview, and projections.

2. Technology transformation roadmap for a government entity

  • Challenge: The organisation needed to modernise its administrative processes but lacked a clear path forward.
  • Approach: A structured Design Sprint series helped assess the current technology landscape and identify a roadmap for future state capabilities using Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power Platform.
  • Outcome: A detailed assessment of their existing technology landscape, documented architectures for current, interim, and future capabilities, an evaluation of technology options, and a final strategic report to support business case development and future investment planning.

3. PPM reporting requirements for an utility company

  • Challenge: Stakeholders required a portfolio-wide reporting solution using live data from their new PPM tool to track key project metrics. The standard PPM dashboards lacked the flexibility to meet the organisation’s unique requirements.
  • Approach: Our Mojo Design Sprint engaged over 30 stakeholders, ensuring alignment on requirements and reporting principles.
  • Outcome: A clear direction and example of future Power BI dashboards with effective visualisation to track key project metrics aligned with business needs.
